7-24-2018 Garden Party - SQUARE

By Mountain Family Health Centers

The Glenwood Springs health center garden hosted a party in late July to celebrate a fruitful growing season and encourage more community involvement. Garden supervisor and Family Nurse Practitioner Jenny Lang reports a lengthy list of produce harvested throughout the summer: zucchini, green beans, beets, chard, radishes, lettuce and more.

After three salad parties and a delicious batch of arugula pesto, Lang and supporters hosted the Mountain Family Health Centers Board of Directors and others at the garden in an effort to develop more community involvement in the garden.

Lang says the hard work and dedication of volunteer and patient champion Jesus Campos is an essential reason for the success of the garden thus far. Campos regularly waters and otherwise volunteers in the garden, which is adjacent to Mountain Family’s health center at 1905 Blake Avenue in Glenwood Springs.

Board member Samuel Bernal attended the gathering; Bernal is Vice President of Integrated Marketing Solutions with the Entravision Communications Corporation and Basalt radio station La TriColor. La Tricolor interviewed Campos about his involvement and positive experiences with the garden, then shared with followers on Facebook. (Click here to see the full video.)

Lang, who is also Site Medical Director for the Glenwood Springs and Edwards health centers, expects a bumper crop of tomatoes and corn as the summer continues. She emphasizes the theme of the garden is helping staff and volunteers understand how important food is for health, with food as the first medicine for being healthy.
